This is a bit different to usual, but I thought I'd share all the books I've read this year that weren't for uni and what I thought of them.
Starting off strong with Tasha Suri's wonderful Indian-inspired feminist high fantasy series 'The Burning Kingdoms'. I've read both The Jasmine Throne and The Oleander Sword this year and I'm so excited for the last book in the trilogy The Lotus Empire to come out this November.
If you're in want of an adult fantasy with morally grey lesbians, then this series is absolutely for you. It's an absolute five/five star read from me.
'One is a vengeful princess seeking to depose her brother from his throne.
The other is a priestess searching for her family.
Together, they will change the fate of an empire.
Imprisoned by her dictator brother, Malini spends her days in isolation in the Hirana: an ancient temple that was once the source of powerful magic - but is now little more than a decaying ruin.
Priya is a maidservant, one of several who make the treacherous journey to the top of the Hirana every night to attend Malini's chambers. She is happy to be an anonymous drudge, as long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides. But when Malini accidentally bears witness to Priya's true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled . . .' (Amazon description of The Jasmine Throne)
Then, one of my autobuy authors, Kalynn Bayron... This year I read both You're not Supposed to Die Tonight as well as Sleep Like Death.
You're not Supposed to Die Tonight is a sapphic horror book following Charity who plays the Final Girl at a horror game at Camp Mirror Lake where they recreate scenes from a classic slasher film. But not everything is as it seems... 4/5 stars
Sleep Like Death is a reimagining of the tale of Snow White following Princess Eve as she strives to save her mother's queendom from the Knight, a man who grants wishes with an evil twist. 4/5 stars
Last Courtesan of Olympus by Amanda Meuwissen is a spicy Achillean book following Aikos, the skilled and coveted acolyte of Aphrodite. All the gods want him, and all have an exciting encounter with him. 4/5 stars
Next, two fantastically spicy gay novellas by Lucien Burr, Prince of Lust and Hell and its Pleasures. 4/5 stars each. They follow a repressed priest as he encounters a demon and lets himself fall into his desires. They're very short and quick reads following one after the other.
